LETTERPRESS

Letter Press Session
Time - Oct 28 2014

We have this session at the New North Press, there is a really old massive letter press studio. I were attracted by thousands of wood letters, different sizes, shapes, decorations and machines. I realized  that made a perfect printing is really difficult work, you need to be adept at dynamic of pressure, letters' height and spacing adjustment. It is a hard work basically, but I am happy to experience this old work and understand history of publishing deeply.

PROTEST PROJECT

Protest Project - Gendercide
Time - November 25 2014
Group Member - Meiyu Yin / Zitang Wu / Issy Cheung / Mabel Dilliway

There are a lot of issues which are very important and interesting, such as political issueseconomic topics and cultural issues. Compared with other issues, our group, however, are more interested in the topic of abortionbecause we think perhaps no issues are more controversial than abortion, which involve taking the life of a human being. In addition one of our teammate’s mother is a doctor who can provide us many information and recommendations for this issue. Therefore, our group decided on investigating induced abortion. Through a broad literature review and survey we fond that different people hold different attitudes toward abortion. Some people think people have the right to decide whether to keep a child. However, there are also many people are anti-abortion. Abortion opponents, who regard embryos as nascent human life, think induced abortion is immoral and some of them even think it is anti-human. Our group is against induced abortion. We think that abortion not only does harms to women’s health but also seems unfair to take a life of a baby.

From some reports and news, we find that now more and more pregnancies women abortion in the world and the problem of abortion is becoming increasingly severe in Asiaespecially in Indian and China, compared to Europe. Some research pointed out that the cultural preference for boys in Indian deeply rooted in many people's mind, which led to the millions of baby girls and female fetuses killed by parents who prefer boys. I read a news last week that there are already 100 million girls "missing" due to sex-selective abortion and female infanticide, and more than 12 million girls are “missing” in the past 30 years in Indian, according to the English medical journal The Lancet. The Indian 2011 census showed that there were about seven million more boys than girls aged under seven in the country. There are more than six million women have an abortion every year in Indian. The situation of abortion has brought a big problem on the nation's growing gender ratio imbalance and the development of society. Based on the information, our group thought the issue of induced abortion should be concern. Therefore we want to design a work to make people raise concerns about female’s health and that innocent fetuses should have the right to live. We often read some news that parents abandoned babies in the vicinity of the central park or some public area. Therefore, after our group discussion about how to design our project, we had an idea that we put a sound in a garbage can and played infant crying. Passing pedestrians who were hearing this crying would be curious for this sound, and then they might pause and opened the garbage can in a street. We have put an information that tell people to“protect human health and treasure human life  cherish life and  into the garbage in advance. Therefore, once people opened it, they would see this information.  We made a video to record the process of people’s activity.

During this group work, I found that the most important thing is effective commutation and a good project not only aim to attract people’s attrition but also should take into consideration of people’s acceptability. Our teammates have totally different background and each of us has different picture of a same issue. We spent a long time to discuss the topic of abortion and to design our work. Through this group work, I have learnt to cooperate with one another. I think that it is natural for people to have different opinions, feelings, or approaches to things and actively communication can help us to people find a balance for our work. These different opinions do make us have a broad understanding of what we want to do. In addition, our project designed to play baby crying in the garbage and this baby crying scared some passerby and some nervous people was visibly angry after opening the garbage and finding that it was not true and it was just a project. I am regretful that we did not take plenty of possible factors into account to our manner. Next time, I will take into consideration of people’s acceptability of our design and image the worst-case.

YOSHITOMO NARA: Greeting from a place in my heart

Yoshitomo Nara is my favorite Japan artist, his art work usually with a sad girl or kid. Sometimes the little girl is mad, sometimes is unhappy, sometimes is dolorous. I can feel the world he imagine,  the peace can cover anything. This is the biggest art exhibition he have so far, there include architectures and  paintings.

Damien Hirst: Schizophrenogenesis

This isn’t the first time Hirst has dabbled in pharmaceutical accoutrements. His defunct Notting Hill restaurant, Pharmacy, was designed like a dispensary, and previous works have dealt with our reliance on medical treatments to prolong life. It’s a typically grand gesture by the former YBA, even if it feels well past its use-by date.
It is an import issue of nowadays society, more and more people are living on medicine and pills, even though the pills doesn't work, people still believe if they take it they would be better.

Big and bold is what Hirst has always been good at. We expect it from him. And the sculptures of giant tablets and medicine packaging turn the contents of a bathroom cabinet into kaleidoscopic works of art. Sudafed capsules, lined up on a shelf, are precise replicas. Diamond-shaped Pfizer lozenges come in either baby pink or baby blue. The minimalist designs of antibiotic packs are accentuated while, at the back of the gallery, bottles and boxes spill their contents under the glow of a neon sign that spells out the title of the show, ‘Schizophrenogenesis’.--time out

NEWSPAPER DAY IN BANQUETTING ROOM

Newspaper Day in Banquetting RoomTime - October 24 2014It is a interesting work shop to feel our logos. We zoom in it and made it become a 3D outcome. It is a good time to working with other classmate but unfortunately I didn't take a picture of our group's work. Sometimes we make a thing magnification over 100 times, it will be an unexpected result come out. Zooming in will give us a different way to think of and reflect on things.

LOGO PROJECT

LOGO PROJECT - Go Out & Find Stuff
Time - October 10 2014
Group member - Meiyu Yin / Ella Graham / Hide Nogawa

Our logo's them is "go out and find stuff". It is my first time to design a logo, when I got this them, I think it is too abstract, I don not know what to express and how to convey. At the beginning, I and my group mate were thought about the eye, the door, the magnifier and the feet. When we finished first tutorial, we choose the treasure chest as we develop aim. The treasure chest indeed give people a feeling about seeking and something will come out from the chest. Finally I choose one of chest logos as the final work.
I think logo usually use letters of the brand or use relevant references, like a fish and chip shop absolutely use fish and chip dish as it logo. Logo is a symbol to distinguish from other brand's logo. I think it should be clean and communicated as well. So I think my final one is not powerful and successful. Hide's final one is a word "seek" in calligraphy with arrows is really good and successful for this project.
